Poesia Agora

Latin American Studies at the University of Toronto

Jackman Humanities Bld. 170 St. George St., room 535, Toronto

Some people might consider poetry as an elitist pursuit, difficult to understand because of complicated language and lack of references. LAS Visiting Scholar Lucas Viriato aims to clear misunderstandings about the function of poetry by sharing the decisions he took when curating an exhibition titled "Poesia Agora". This exhibit, presented in 2015-17 aimed to broaden the context of Brazilian poetry since 2000 and emphasise how such poetry can question itself and society. The goal is to undertake a critical investigation of Brazil's contemporary poetry, considering it not merely as text, but as system of social practices and a form of life. In other words, how can poetry change your life?
