The ladies of the Sorauren book club experience a more charged evening than they anticipated when estranged member Carol arrives unannounced. Spirited discussions erupt as the women tackle challenging conversations about their friendships, their community, faith, religion, the traumas they carry and the secrets they hold. Woven throughout are lively interactions about their chosen book; Colm Toibin’s “The Testament of Mary”. While exploring questions about Mary’s true herstory; appropriation of voice; patriarchal power constructs; gender, motherhood; and the immaculate conception the women learn more about one another and their own selves. As the evening heats up Carol pleads for the restoration of good relations among them. In her plea she addresses the play’s theme: “What good are we, as ageing women, if not for caring for each other?”
